At the time of the Indiana Library School's opening 1905, only eight other library schools had been established in the United States.

1. The New York Library School. The first library school in the United States, the New York State Library School was originally established in 1887 as the School of Library Economy at Columbia College in New York City. The school transferred to Albany in 1889.

2. The Pratt Institute Library School. Established in 1890 in Manhattan. Still in existence.

3. The Drexel Institute Library School. The Library School at the Drexel Institute was established in 1892 by Alice B. Kroeger, a student of Melvil Dewey. The school was eliminated in 1914 but reopened in 1922 as the School of Library Science and continues today as the College of Information Science and Technology.

4. The Illinois State Library School. Established at the Armour Institute of Technology in 1893 and moved to Urbana in 1897. The school changed names yet again in 1926 to the University of Illinois Library School.

5. The Carnegie Library Training School, Pittsburgh. Established as part of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in 1901, the school was originally known as the Carnegie Training School for Children's Librarians.

6. Simmons College Library School. Established in 1902 in Boston. Still in existence at Simmons as the Graduate School of Library and Information Science.

7. Western Reserve University Library School. The Western Reserve University Library School was founded in 1904 by the head librarian of the Cleveland Public Library, Wm. Howard Brett, with the help of an endowment from Andrew Carnegie. Due to low enrollment, the school closed in 1986.

8. The Southern Library School. Modeled after the Pratt Institute Library School, the Southern Library School opened in 1905 in Atlanta. In 1907, its name changed to Carnegie Library Training School of Atlanta but then later became known as the Atlanta Library School to differentiate it from the school in Pittsburgh.
